1. Storage Assessment
q Jim D’Aboy of Cosmopolitan Engineering gave on update on the Regional Task Force work for the wastewater treatment and water project in Shelton.
q Jim also gave an update on the water storage assessment, which Cosmopolitan is preparing for the Planning Unit.
q Currently there are four sites being assessed for applicability for ground water recharge infiltration, all in the vicinity of Sanderson Field runway.
q The next steps are to analyze soil samples and possibly conduct a mounding analysis.
q Cosmopolitan will return in October (to either a TC or PU meeting) with a recommendation to the PU on which site should be selected for additional analyses. The PU delegated this decision to the TC if the briefing is scheduled for the October TC meeting instead of the PU meeting.
q The storage assessment will be completed by the end of the year.
2. Report on Habitat Chapter
q Amy Hatch-Winecka gave an update on the habitat chapter prepared by the Lead Entity Group.
q The report is undergoing a comment period and will be finalized in November. Amy will e-mail the report to Susan so that PU members can review and provide comments.
3. Update on Oakland Bay TMDL
q Chris Hempleman of Ecology gave an update on the Oakland Bay TMDL (clean-up process), which is generally about a 4-5 year process.
q The Oakland Bay TMDL focuses on fecal coliform and temperature, which are not currently meeting water quality standards.
q Field work, which will last about a year, will begin in November and will be followed by about 6 months of data analysis. A draft technical report will be completed in mid-2006. This will be followed by a process to obtain EPA approval in 2007 and then adoption of the final detailed implementation plan in 2008.
q John K. described in detail the technical work that will be conducted, one project focuses on temperature and a second focuses on fecal coliform.
4. Updates
q Hydro-Geo Project
o PU members signed a letter to well owners asking permission to monitor their wells. Jim Mathieu will use the letter when he is seeking permission.
q Public Involvement
o Bob Simmons gave an update on public involvement, and introduced Emily Piper as a new staff person for the project (Marilyn will still be involved as well).
o The WRIA 14 booth at the Mason County Fair was well received. Bob is now looking for volunteers to help with Oysterfest.
o They are working on some new radio spots as well as an upcoming article on the planning process for the Journal.
5. Upcoming Meetings
q The next meeting of the Joint Watershed Planning Committee for Hood Canal will be on Thursday, October 7th from 1-3 at the Hoodsport Library.
