WRIA 14
TECHNICAL COMMITTEE MEETING
Wednesday, March 9,
2005
10:00 a.m. – 12:00
p.m.
Shelton Civic Center
Shelton, WA
MEETING SUMMARY
Attending:
Allan Borden, Mason County; Jeanne
Kinney, Thurston County; Phil Wiatrak, Dept. of Ecology; Terra Hegy, WDFW; Al
Frey, Port of Shelton; Bob Simmons, WSU Coop Extension; John Konovsky, Squaxin
Island Tribe; Drew Noble, Water Purveyors;
John Noble, Citizen; and Susan Gulick, Sound Resolutions.
1.
Presentation on Goldsborough Creek Temperature Study
q John
Konovsky gave an overview of the results of the temperature study and seepage
runs on Goldsborough Creek. The results
are summarized in an attached document.
q One
surprising result is the level of groundwater gain inside the City of
Shelton. This result is atypical
behavior for a stream spreading out on a delta. It is surmised that the groundwater may come primarily from
Shelton Creek or the Salmon Spring aquifer rather than from Goldsborough Creek.
2.
Storage
Project
q Ecology
has approved the Port using water for the storage water pump tests at the
John’s Prairie Site; however the Port wants to have this in writing.
q Once this
is finalized, the tests can begin.
q The Technical
Committee would like the tests to begin after Northwest Land and Water has
installed their instruments in the well.
3.
Comments
on Watershed Plan Chapter (Scientific Framework)
q The
Technical Committee reviewed the comments received.
q Due to the
length of comments there was not time to review all of them. Susan will ask Nancy (the consultant who is
writing the plan) to alert the committee if there are any problematic or
conflicting comments so that the TC can give her more guidance.
4.
Hydro-Geo
Study
q The Port
is ready to sign the agreement with NW Land and Water. This should be finalized at the next meeting
of the Port Commissioners.
5.
Planning Unit Retreat
q There will
be an all day retreat on Wednesday, March 23rd, at the Panhandle 4-H
Camp. (see http://panhandle4-hcamp.wsu.edu/index.html
for more information on the camp).
q The
retreat will be from 10-4.
q The
purpose of the retreat is to develop a list of options to be considered in the
watershed plan. The Planning Unit will
not be discussing the pros and cons of each option—that will be done during the
discussion of recommendations—but will simply be identifying options they’d
like to consider.
6.
Upcoming Meetings
q The next
Planning Unit meeting will be an all day retreat (see above) on Wednesday,
March 23rd, from 10-4:00 at the Pan Handle Camp outside of Shelton.
q The April
Technical Committee meeting has been CANCELLED. The next Technical Committee meeting will be on Wednesday, April
27th from 10-12 pm.
