1.      Water Quality Update by Mason County

q       Stephanie Kenny gave an overview of Mason County’s water quality monitoring efforts.

q       The ambient monitoring program draws samples from 57 streams (collecting over 456 samples in 2004).

q       The lake monitoring program began in 2004 and collected 79 samples from 14 lakes.

q       The County has also installed piezometers in the Skokomish valley’s shallow aquifer to monitor groundwater levels.

q        During 2004, the County also collected 120 samples at 4 state parks on marine beaches.

q       Monitoring at marine shellfish areas gathers over 600 samples each year.

q       The County also conducts groundwater monitoring and public outreach events.

q       The County has purchased equipment funded by the Planning Unit’s water quality grant from Ecology.  The equipment allows the County to test for additional parameters, consistent with the WRIA 14 Water Quality Monitoring Plan.

q       The baseline (tier one) data from the water quality monitoring plan is almost complete.  After it is complete, the County will begin tier two monitoring as funding allows.

2.      Watershed Plan

q       The Planning Unit reviewed the key issues identified by Nancy Riccio, the consultant writing the plan.  Susan will share with Nancy some desired revisions.

q       There will be an all day retreat (10-4) on Wednesday, March 23rd with Nancy to develop options for inclusion in the plan.  The location has not yet been finalized.  PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

3.      Other Issues

q       The Port of Shelton has requested to be a governmental member of the Planning Unit.  This will require a formal vote by the Planning Unit.  This will discussed at the next PU meeting.

q       The letter requesting a meeting between Squaxin Island Tribal officials and local elected officials regarding the WRIA 14 Watershed Plan was finalized.

q       The TC discussed concerns about the storage project.  When the consultants present an update of their work at the next PU meeting, the TC would like them to clearly give a task by task overview of the scope of work and budget.

q       NW Land and Water is still trying to work out an agreement with the Port to use their wells.  Susan will get an update for the next PU meeting.
